Englands largest festival of history and culture took place in September. An opportunity to visit hidden places and try new experiences – FREE. Bideford & River Torridge Heritage Harbour coordinated 17 events in and around Bideford during the 2025 festival.
These included a mini ceramic exhibition at The Burton, with items from their archive not usually on display to the public, together with a talk on ‘Ceramics and International Trade’. There was a Heritage Harbour exhibition and talk ‘Transformed by War’ at The Pocket Bouldering Centre, High Street – itself an interesting new use for an old Woolworths shop.
Members of the public were able to view examples of elaborate 17th century plasterwork created by the Abbott family from Frithelstock at the Royal Hotel and in the building occupied by Trio and Bond hair salon on The Quay. Bideford Bridge Trust offices in Bridgeland Street displayed architectural drawings of the bridge – it is 100 years since it was last widened in 1925 – as well as information about the properties and land owned by the trust.
Events with a maritime link included: ‘The Reds’ Rowing Club building, the restoration of lifeboat Jane Hannah MacDonald III (the last rowed lifeboat based at Appledore 1910-1924), Steamship Freshspring, and heritage and art including the use of leather in shipbuilding from Rosie and Red Art and Leather at their workshop and studio in the old gasworks building, East the Water.
The Elisabeth Deneys memorial plaque was unveiled by the Mayor during Bideford Railway Heritage Centre’s open day, and for the more active there were guided walks at East the Water, Westward Ho! and Tarka Valley Railway.
There were 17 events over the Heritage Open Days Festival 12-21 September 2025: 2 exhibitions with associated talks, 3 guided walks, 9 open day events and 1 public unveiling of a memorial plaque. The estimate of visits is in excess of 380 to all events. This is visits not separate visitors as many visitors took the opportunity to visit several events, especially when they were on at the same time and situated close to each other. It was not possible to collect complete visitor numbers for each event, especially the exhibitions open over several days.

This bouldering and climbing centre occupies the building that was previously Woolworths and Factory Shop and shows how retail spaces can be transformed into different uses as shopping habits change. Bouldering is a stripped-down form of climbing where the challenge is to work out the sequence of moves to conquer the short but tricky bouldering “problems”, making up a route. The Pocket is hosting the ‘Transformed by War’ Exhibition created by Bideford and River Torridge Heritage Harbour and the UK Heritage Harbours. No booking required, access off High Street. Thanks to The Pocket for hosting exhibition.
13-21 September The Burton at Bideford EX39 2QQ – present a mini-exhibition of ceramics selected from its archive, displaying works not typically accessible to the public. The display will be accompanied by a talk by a curatorial staff member or associate on Sunday the 14th of September. Pre-booking for the talk will be required. The Burton at Bideford is one of the leading cultural and community venues in the South West, available for everyone to love and access freely. 1130 Elisabeth Deneys Memorial Bideford Station EX39 4BB – memorial plaque to be unveiled by Mayor of Bideford Councillor Peter Lawrence. Bideford has a long history as a place of sanctuary: French Huguenots escaping religious persecution in the 1600s, Belgian refugees in WW I, evacuees in WW II and today those escaping conflict in Eastern Europe and around the world. This new plaque; in memory of 11-year-old Belgian Refugee Elisabeth Deneys, killed by a train while playing on the station in 1917; remembers those who have and continue to find safety here and the compassion of local people who support them. Organised by Bideford & River Torridge Heritage Harbour together with Bideford Town Council.
1000-1300 Trio and Bond Hair Studio EX39 2HW – once the Three Tuns pub. The overmantel on the chimney breast has at its centre a man in late Stuart costume, and the Grenville coat of arms with its three clarions. This was earlier believed to have been Sir Richard Grenville’s grandson, Bevil Grenville, who owned property on Bideford Quay and died fighting for the royalists in the Civil War. However, it is now believed that it was originally made to sit above a fireplace in the Grenville’s house at Stowe, near Kilkhampton, built by Bevil’s son, John, in the late 1670s. Stowe was demolished after little more than sixty years and its contents used in other buildings, so it may have come to Bideford then. Trio and Bond Hair Studio First Floor, 8A The Quay EX39 2HW.
